Every day, Bill O'Reilly's website features a nonscientific poll of his audience on a political issue; O'Reilly typically airs the results on his Fox News program. Today, O'Reilly asked his audience, “What concerns you the most?” Here were the results:
48 percent of O'Reilly's respondents say their top concern is illegal immigration; the economy came in second at 41 percent, with O'Reilly chiming in, “That would have been my vote.”
O'Reilly is right to be a bit defensive about his audience's apparent priorities -- those priorities are well out of step with those of most Americans.
For example, according to a May NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, 7 percent of respondents think immigration should be the “top priority for the federal government.” Likewise, a May Fox News poll says that 5 percent think immigration is “most important for the federal government to be working on right now.”
On the other hand, perhaps this explains O'Reilly's absurd smears of Obama administration officials' immigration positions.
