As Congress looked to pass a spending bill to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, right-wing media and abortion opponents took their cues from the White House and began a campaign to falsely blame the inclusion of abortion funding for GOP resistance to the bill.
Right-wing media and abortion opponents hype misinformation about the coronavirus spending bill

According to NBC News, a spending bill spearheaded by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was running into problems because “the White House believes provisions in the Pelosi bill that pertain to the Violence Against Women Act could open the door to federal funds for abortion. In response, the White House wants to add Hyde Amendment language to the bill.” The Hyde Amendment is a budgetary rider which prohibits federal funding from covering the costs of abortions, except in very limited circumstances. While the status of the spending bill is ever evolving, Politico reported that the “two sides resolved issues over federal funding of abortion in a separate bill that will also hit the floor.”
As journalists and abortion rights advocates explained, Republicans’ attacks on Pelosi and their move to add Hyde Amendment language is a disingenuous political tactic that is impeding much-needed health care access during a crisis:
The White House gave right-wing outlet The Daily Caller an “exclusive,” providing the following talking points:
“A new mandatory funding stream that does not have Hyde protections would be unprecedented,” one White House official explained. “Under the guise of protecting people, Speaker Pelosi is working to make sure taxpayer dollars are spent covering abortion — which is not only backwards, but goes against historical norms.”
A second White House official referred to the provision as a “slush fund” and yet another questioned “what the Hyde Amendment and abortion have to do with protecting Americans from coronavirus?”
However, according to The American Independent:
There is absolutely no evidence that the funding the Democratic bill calls for would go toward abortion.
In fact, House Democrats filed what's called a “manager's amendment,” which makes clear that the funding can only be used for “COVID-19 diagnostic tests and related administration or service costs.”
“Claims reimbursed under this section would be limited to those for uninsured individuals not eligible for other COVID-19 testing and services assistance included in the bill,” reads a summary of the amendment from the House Rules Committee.
These facts didn’t stop right-wing media and abortion opponents from launching attacks on Pelosi and House Democrats or from picking up the White House talking points published by The Daily Caller:

LifeNews.com, which frequently dominates abortion-related conversations on platforms like Facebook, published an article citing The Daily Caller and received high engagement numbers on social media while spreading several disingenuous attacks on Pelosi:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi is so dedicated to promoting abortion and forcing Americans to fund killing babies in abortion that she has been caught trying to add taxpayer financing of abortions to the bill to combat the Coronavirus and provide economic stimulus to the nation as it deals with the COVD-19 outbreak.
Nancy Pelosi has a long history of promoting abortion and her first act after becoming Speaker in 2019 was pushing legislation to use tax money for abortions. So it’s no surprise she is trying to exploit the Coronavirus pandemic to push abortion funding again.
…
Americans should insist to their members of Congress that we need a clean bill that provides aggressive action to help patients and spur the economy. Killing babies with our tax dollars is not the answer to the coronavirus and the situation should not be exploited for political gain.

- Fox News contributor Dan Bongino alleged Democrats were politicizing the situation -- notably, following right-wing media's racist efforts to rebrand the coronavirus as the “Wuhan” virus:
-
On Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) claimed that by not including the Hyde Amendment in the spending bill, “you could spend up to a $1 billion effectively on state-sponsored abortions, state-funded abortions.” Co-anchor Ed Henry didn’t push back on this, saying, “A lot of people [are] raising eyebrows as to why Speaker Pelosi wanted that abortion funding, as you say, in there for something that is an emergency.”
- The Daily Caller’s Logan Hall:
- The Daily Caller’s Geoffrey Ingersoll:
Democrats have been doing everything they can to politicize the Wuhan coronavirus against President Donald Trump instead of concentrating on doing what’s best for the country at this time and pulling together.
…
But now, according to multiple senior White House officials, Pelosi was trying to slip in a loophole to the Hyde Amendment and create a potential way to have federal funding for abortion in the virus stimulus plan.
…
How wrong is that? Here’s a bill that she knows people want so she’s trying to tack on things, knowing that when Republicans object, she’ll cry, “They don’t care about the American people and the virus.”
…
Imagine someone playing games like this with the lives of Americans. She’s just going to blow everyone off unless she gets what she wants that has nothing to do with the virus or helping people.
This is just despicable.
