Police arrest family in Van Nuys

Fox News deceptively edits video of police officers wrongfully handcuffing a Black family

On June 1, a local Fox affiliate broadcast an incident in which a Black family in Van Nuys, California, attempted to get the attention of passing police cars to protect a neighborhood store from a group of people trying to rob it. After they made several attempts to flag them down, the police finally arrived on the scene and immediately handcuffed members of the family who were requesting help, while some officers ran after the others fleeing the scene.

The clip promptly drew outrage.

Fox “straight news” program Bill Hemmer Reports aired an edited version that showed images of the family talking to the police without giving any context about who they were or explaining that they were attempting to protect their business, and excluded the portion of the video where the family was handcuffed. “Half a dozen looters showed up and tried to hit a golden jewelry store next door. There was a standoff, and there a reporter became a witness” said a voice-over in the news package.

Fox has been avoiding covering the brutality and abuse inflicted by law enforcement personnel on the protesters across the country.
