Daily Show highlights 1866 Citizenship Clause debate

We noted on July 31 that a recent Wall Street Journal article failed to note that during the Senate debate over the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment, lawmakers both for and against the amendment recognized that it would apply to the children of immigrants.

We quoted Senator Edgar Cowan's claim that “is utterly and totally impossible to mingle all the various families of men, from the lowest form of the Hottentot up to the highest Caucasian, in the same society.” The Daily Show's Jon Stewart responds: “Boy, was that guy wrong.”
