After Trump walks out of meeting with Democrats, Fox “news” reporter claims there's “no indication” Congress wants to work with Trump

John Roberts: Congressional Democrats "say that they wanted to do things legislatively, but there's no indication that they really want to work together in some sort of collegial fashion ... It's all about trying to keep this administration on the ropes

JOHN ROBERTS (FOX NEWS CHIEF WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT): We've seen a lot here at the White House, but even by White House standards, this was pretty wild, reminiscent somewhat of what happened here January the 9th when the president walked out of a meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer in the Situation Room. The president had believed that they were going to have a meeting on infrastructure. He had hoped to, you know, try to figure out some way to pay $2 trillion for infrastructure renewal. But, when Nancy Pelosi came out this morning and said what she said about the president engaging in a cover-up, the president out loud -- well, first of all, he knew that there was going to be no possibility for an infrastructure meeting, but he allowed the speaker and the minority leader to come over to the White House and then gave them a piece of his mind.

...

Chuck Schumer is right about one thing. It was planned. But it wasn't pre-planned. It was hastily planned. The president got up this morning, fully believing that he was going to have an infrastructure meeting, and then Nancy Pelosi said what she said a little bit after 10 and everything changed. But they did get all that material together pretty quickly. But the bottom line here, Harris, is you can pretty much kiss good-bye the chances of anything getting done now between now and the November election. Because the Democrats believe that their best way to beat President Trump in 2020 is to try to keep him on the ropes with these political investigations. And the president is not likely to want to work with Democrats while they're trying to gut him with a filleting knife.

HARRIS FAULKNER (ANCHOR): I would have to imagine, John, that this gets complicated for people like Sen. Mitch McConnell and others, who are up for re-election. They want to get things done. You've got a debt ceiling lift that traditionally always happens. No doubt they'll fight about it this time. And then you've got the spending bill that McConnell really wants. What happens next?

ROBERTS: I think you're going to see pretty much what we saw for much of the first couple of years of the president's term. And that is that there's going to be this banging of the heads between the White House and Democrats because the Democrats' number one goal is to try to get rid of President Trump in 2020. They say that they wanted to do things legislatively, but there's no indication that they really want to work together in some sort of collegial fashion where there is comity between the White House and Congress. It's all about trying to keep this administration on the ropes with these political investigations, because they are not criminal investigations, in hopes that the majority of the country will vote for whomever the Democratic nominee is.
