Fox and Glenn Beck are once again continuing their attacks on the Obama administration for watching and talking about the importance of Al Jazeera. Fox Nation, for instance, claimed that the Obama White House is “Go[ing] Gaga for Al Jazeera.”
However, since Fox News itself has turned to Al Jazeera to provide coverage of important events in the Arab world, Fox Nation and The Blaze appear to be arguing that rather than monitor Al Jazeera, the administration should stay uninformed about what is going on in the Middle East.
Here is Fox Nation's post, which links to a piece in Politico.
The Blaze stated:
Hillary Clinton loves it. It seems to love the Muslim Brotherhood. And now Barack Obama seems to be a fan of it, too. What is “it?” The Middle Eastern cable news channel Al Jazeera.
In a lengthy article, Politico reveals that the once-demonized outlet during the Bush administration has become a favorite in the Obama White House. In fact, its programing is plastered all over Pennsylvania Avenue and Obama is singing its praises.
The posts by Fox Nation and The Blaze follow the criticism of Fox talk show hosts who targeted Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for complimenting Al Jazeera on its coverage of the recent protests in the Middle East and Africa and providing " real news." Although Fox has labeled Al Jazeera as a "propaganda machine," the fact is that Al-Jazeera does indeed provide critical coverage of foreign affairs especially those in the Middle East and Africa. The very fact that Fox News -- a network that touts their dislike for Al Jazeera, used its coverage provides some insight on why the Obama administration has perhaps become a fan of Al Jazeera.
If Fox is so utterly concerned about the Obama administration watching Al Jazeera, it should first explain why it used the networks coverage itself during the protests in Egypt earlier this year. Presumably, Fox News used Al Jazeera's coverage because Fox News executives felt the network provided information and video coverage on the protests in Egypt before the other networks. Perhaps, that is why Clinton, speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, stated:
Like it or hate it, [Al Jazeera] is really effective. In fact, viewership of Al Jazeera is going up in the United States because it's real news. You may not agree with it but you feel like you are getting real news.
It also seems somewhat hypocritical that Fox would knowingly attack another network for having slanted views, when it has had its own problems with networks executives purposely misinforming viewers.
