In the opening sentence of a report on Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice's February 8 speech to the prestigious French political science institute Sciences Po, FOX News White House correspondent James Rosen labeled the institute “left wing” and adopted Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld's disparaging term "old Europe" to refer to France and other western European nations.
From the February 8 edition of FOX News' Special Report with Brit Hume:
ROSEN: Speaking to one of France's leading left-wing political science academies, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged old Europe to put aside the old differences over Iraq.
Rosen provided no basis for labeling the academy “left wing.” In fact, the Institute of Political Science, the teaching entity within Sciences Po, includes among its alumni L. Paul Bremer III, former administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq. Other alumni of either the Institute of Political Science or Science Po's research institute, the National Foundation of Political Science, include:
- French President Jacques Chirac, a member of the center-right political party Union for a Popular Movement (Union pour un Mouvement Populaire)
- Chandrika Kumaratunga, president of Sri Lanka
- Paul Biya, president of Cameroon
- Simone Veil, former president of the European Parliament
- Nicole Fontaine, former president of the European Parliament
- Boutros Boutros-Ghali, sixth Secretary-General of the United Nations
- François Mitterrand, former French President (1981-1995)
- Georges Pompidou, former French President (1969-1974)
- Lionel Jospin, former French Prime Minister (1997-2002)
- Alain Juppé, former French Prime Minister (1995-1997)
- Édouard Balladur, former French Prime Minister (1993-1995)
- Michel Rocard, former French Prime Minister (1988-1991)
