Appearing on FOX News Channel's Hannity & Colmes on July 13, Kevin Martin -- an environmental contractor and member of the conservative African American group Project 21 -- compared the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to the Ku Klux Klan.
Martin, who has appeared on Hannity & Colmes at least eight times in the past three-and-a-half years, defended President George W. Bush's refusal to address the annual convention of the NAACP. "[I]t would be like asking a Jewish rabbi to go down to a Ku Klux Klan skinhead convention," Martin stated.
Hannity & Colmes has hosted representatives of Project 21 three times in the last three months. Project 21 is a program of the right-wing National Center for Public Policy Research designed to provide media outlets with a black conservative viewpoint; according to the center's tax-exempt filings, it exists to “promote policy/practice improvements in minority issues” through “editorials to 375 African-American newspapers, seminars, and media interviews.” The center's executive director, David Almasi, who previously worked for Reed Irvine's right-wing Accuracy in Academia group, oversees Project 21.*
