BILL O'REILLY: But here's my take on what's going on in the Windy City. The white liberal establishment in Chicago, which control everything, they don't care enough about Tyshawn and other people to stop the madness. They could stop it, but they don't care enough. Am I wrong?

KEVIN POWELL: Well, sir, I actually think it's both sides, I think it's Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives that have really abandoned poor people. The same poor people that Dr. King talked about at the end of his life that we should not abandon, that's poor people of all backgrounds. I'm from that background, I'm from the Chicagos of the world. I've been to every inner city in this country, all 50 states, and part of the problem is that, yeah, we do talk about the killings in our communities. The problem is that the media doesn't talk about it when we do, we have these situations where we have rallies and boycotts, and challenging the people in our communities who are committing the violence, you know. But we also talk about the fact that there's programs that are missing.

O'REILLY: OK --

POWELL: That means I was able to get out of -- let me finish. In my lifetime, sir, I was raised by a single mother, no father. But because of a great public school education, because of sports programs, because of after-school programs, there were resources in place. And the reality is when I was growing up, it was just the beginning of guns coming into our communities. They weren't as accessible as they are now across the board. That's the problem, sir.

O'REILLY: All right but we have to take it one situation at a time. Now there has been no cable news program in the world giving more coverage to Chicago violence than this program. And not only coverage--

POWELL: Is that right?

O'REILLY: -- but I put forth solutions. And the solution is that first you have to stabilize the situation to protect little boys like Tyshawn and innocent people who are trapped in these communities. And to do that, you have to put the National Guard in those neighborhoods in Chicago. You have to have very aggressive policing. And you have to send a message to the gangs that this behavior is not going to be tolerated in the United States. That has been ignored by the Chicago administration totally, and even met with resistance from some in the community.

POWELL: Well sir, what you're talking about is law and order, which is the same thing that Richard Nixon talked about in 1968 when he was running for president. So it's actually not a new solution, and it's clear by history that it's not a solution that actually works. What works is I'm an example of it. If you actually read my book, The Education of Kevin Powell, I grew up in the same kind of horrific circumstances that is a literal powder keg for inner cities across the country. But because there were programs in place, there were things there to make sure that I had an opportunity, this is why I'm sitting on this show with you right now. This is not about liberal or conservative, about Democrat or Republican. This is about us as human beings as Americans coming together and making sure this violence stops across the board in our country.
