Fox Corp., the parent company of Fox News, has been marketing itself as pro-LGBTQ in material to shareholders and ad buyers. Those claims are in stark contrast to Fox News’ actual programming, which has been waging a campaign of anti-LGBTQ hate.
Fox News has spent years attacking LGBTQ equality, including attacking transgender people; campaigning against non-discrimination measures; and fighting marriage equality.
More recently, Fox News has been defending Florida’s passage of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill and attacking Disney’s opposition to the law as pro-”grooming,” among other attacks. During a recent week, Fox News spent over 3 hours freaking out about Disney and the Florida law.
Simultaneously, Fox Corp. has claimed that it is “committed to LGBTQ+ equality and inclusion” and wants to support “causes important to the LGBTQ+ community,” and has promoted its partnership with LGBTQ organizations. It has also claimed that Fox News “celebrates diversity through” pro-LGBTQ programming and wants to “promote a more inclusive work environment” for LGBTQ individuals.
The following are some of Fox’s attempts to position itself as a pro-LGBTQ company.
Fox Corp. said it is “proud” to have received a Human Rights Campaign Foundation “100% score” (later revoked). In its 2021 corporate social responsibility report, Fox Corp. touted that it has “received a 100% score in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2021 Corporate Equality Index (CEI) – our third year earning top marks. The score gives FOX the distinction of ‘Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality.’” The report also stated that Fox was “recognized as a DiversityComm Top Employer and top LGBTQ+ Friendly Company from 2020 to 2021.”
In another section of the report, Fox Corp. wrote that it’s “proud to have been recognized by outside organizations for our deep commitment to diversity and inclusion and our success in championing various communities within our workforce” and cited the HRC’s and DiversityComm’s recognition.
CNN reported on April 1 that after Fox’s recent attacks related to the “Don’t Say Gay” law, an HRC spokesperson said that “Fox Corporation no longer has a score of 100 on the Corporate Equality Index.”
Fox Corp. Executive Vice President: “At FOX, we celebrate our diverse workforce, and remain committed to LGBTQ+ equality and inclusion.” On January 27, Fox Corp. issued a press release under "investor news" that highlighted HRC’s now-revoked 100 percent score and quoting Fox Corp. Executive Vice President of Human Resources Kevin Lord stating: “At FOX, we celebrate our diverse workforce, and remain committed to LGBTQ+ equality and inclusion. We’ve established inclusive policies and practices with a focus on our recruiting, hiring, and training efforts as well as providing equitable healthcare and other benefits. It’s a source of pride and inspiration to receive this honor from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation for four years running.”
Fox Corp. has touted its collaboration with The Association of LGBTQ Journalists. In its corporate social responsibility report, Fox Corp. wrote that it “collaborates with an array of professional organizations that offer the Company access to recruiting events and conventions,” including the The Association of LGBTQ Journalists (NLGJA). Fox Corp. also highlights the partnership on its Ad Solutions website.
Fox Corp. claimed to help support “causes important to the LGBTQ+ community” through a “Pride” employee resource group. In its corporate social responsibility report, Fox Corp. wrote that it offers a “Pride” employee resource group which “cultivates community among FOX’s LGBTQ+ colleagues and allies, supports causes important to the LGBTQ+ community and fosters a work environment where all colleagues feel 100% authentic and professionally supported.” Fox’s Ad Sales website also highlights the working group.
Fox Corp. claimed that it seeks “to build business opportunities and lasting relationships with companies owned and operated by … LGBTQ individuals.” In its corporate social responsibility report, Fox Corp. wrote:
Finally, we understand that diversity and inclusion should influence the way we purchase goods and services. We are a member of the National Minority Supplier Development Council, and we invite minority business enterprises to engage with us and be part of our vendor base. Our goal is to identify and grow a diverse supplier community that provides us best-in-class goods and services. We engage employees, suppliers, partners and stakeholders through education, training, interaction and leadership initiatives that foster an inclusive culture and environment. We also seek to build business opportunities and lasting relationships with companies owned and operated by women, veterans, people with disabilities and LGBTQ individuals.
Fox News states on its website that it “is focused on building business opportunities and lasting relationships with companies that are Certified by” organizations that include the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce.
In its corporate social responsibility report, Fox Corp. touted its partnership with several LGBTQ organizations.
Fox’s corporate report features an image claiming “it’s all about pride!” From the report:
Fox Corp. has a website showcasing Fox “pride” material. From Fox Corp.'s “inclusion” website, which also touts the company’s Pride working group:
Fox states that its employee policy protects people based on “gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation.” In its corporate responsibility report, Fox Corp. wrote a section about “fostering civility and respect in the workplace” and stated that it is “committed to maintaining a workplace that treats all employees with dignity and respect, and is free from all forms of harassment, discrimination and retaliation.” It added that “our Preventing Harassment, Discrimination and Retaliation Policy protects individuals on the basis of … gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation.”
Fox News released a report claiming that it strives to “promote a more inclusive work environment for all employees, including women, people of color, disabled persons, LGBTQ, and veterans.” From a June 6, 2018, report released by Fox Corp.:
The WPIC [Fox News Workplace Professionalism and Inclusion Council] notes that the Fox News Diversity and Inclusion Council was launched in 2017 and strives to:
• Deepen the leadership and organizational capacity to advance diversity and inclusion at all levels within the Fox News organization;
• Expand Fox News’s efforts and promote a more inclusive work environment for all employees, including women, people of color, disabled persons, LGBTQ, and veterans;
• Encourage the diversity of content across all Fox News content platforms, including broadcast, cable, online and mobile;
• Engage employees, suppliers, partners and stakeholders through education, training, interaction and leadership initiatives that foster an inclusive culture and environment; and
• Reflect the rich diversity presence among the employees and management of the Fox News organization.
The Fox News Diversity and Inclusion Council includes sub-committees focused on recruitment, development, retention, outreach and accountability. The WPIC considered the diversity of experiences, race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation represented on the Fox News Diversity and Inclusion Council and suggested that Fox News increase the membership of non-minorities serving on the Fox News Diversity and Inclusion Council to make clear that its mission is the responsibility of all leaders at
Fox News. The WPIC is pleased to report that the membership of the Fox News Diversity and Inclusion Council has since been expanded in accordance with the WPIC’s recommendation.
Fox’s ad sales website claims that Fox News “celebrates diversity through editorial programming” that includes features about “LGBTQ Pride.” From Fox Corp.'s Ad Sales website:
Fox touts on its Ad Solutions website that it has “more than 500 LGBTQ+ movies and TV shows” on the streaming service Tubi.
Fox released a June 2021 video wishing everyone a “Happy Pride Month.”
