After Teresa Heinz Kerry's speech at the Democratic National Convention on July 27, some FOX News Channel hosts opted to ridicule her remarks.
Chris Wallace, host of FOX News Sunday with Chris Wallace, mocked Heinz Kerry's speech, saying from the convention floor: "[B]y the end, I half expected her to break out into 'Don't Cry for Me, Argentina.'" The song Wallace mentioned is the theme from Evita, a musical about Eva Duarte de Perón, wife of former Argentinean dictator Juan Perón.
On the July 28 edition of the FOX News Channel morning show FOX & Friends, the derision continued when co-host Steve Doocy introduced a discussion of Heinz Kerry's speech by saying: “She got off on a weird foot.” Doocy added to the ridicule, describing the content of her speech as being “about environmentalism, new age stuff, and internationalism.” And noting that Senator John Kerry's (D-MA) wife -- who was born in Mozambique and speaks five languages -- opened her speech with a greeting in each of those languages, including her native Portuguese, co-host Brian Kilmeade agreed with Doocy that the tactic was unorthodox. Doocy said, “Of course, that threw me,” to which Kilmeade responded, “Yeah, it did throw me just a little bit, although sometimes I'm fortunate enough to have a driver that does speak Portuguese.”
This is not the first time FOX News Channel hosts have mocked Heinz Kerry. FOX & Friends hosts Doocy, Kilmeade, and Hill spent part of their July 15 show deriding and distorting remarks she made on the campaign trail, as Media Matters for America previously noted.
