Carl Cameron, FOX News Channel's recently embattled chief political correspondent, showed a truncated video clip of Senator John Kerry from the October 8 presidential debate, in an apparent attempt to suggest Kerry was being dishonest in his response to President George W. Bush's recent charges that Kerry would raise taxes if elected.

After showing the clip in which Kerry vowed, “Right into the camera. Yes. I am not going to raise taxes,” Cameron reported, “Kerry denies the president's charge that he's trying to have it both ways on tax cuts. But Kerry would repeal the Bush tax cut on people making over $200,000 a year, which would increase their taxes.” But that is exactly what Kerry said during the debate, as viewers would have known had Cameron's piece not omitted the question Kerry was asked. The questioner specifically challenged Kerry to pledge not to raise taxes “on families earning less than $200,000 a year.” Cameron's piece also cut off Kerry's subsequent statement that “for the people earning more than $200,000 a year, you're going to see a rollback to the level we were at with [former President] Bill Clinton.”

Here is the transcript of the question Kerry was asked and the response he provided during the second presidential debate:

QUESTIONER: Senator Kerry, would you be willing to look directly into the camera and, using simple and unequivocal language, give the American people your solemn pledge not to sign any legislation that will increase the tax burden on families earning less than $200,000 a year during your first term?

KERRY: Absolutely. Yes. Right into the camera. Yes. I am not going to raise taxes. ... I'm pledging I will not raise taxes; I'm giving a tax cut to the people earning less than $200,000 a year. Now, for the people earning more than $200,000 a year, you're going to see a rollback to the level we were at with Bill Clinton, when people made a lot of money.

And looking around here, at this group here, I suspect there are only three people here who are going to be affected: the president, me, and, Charlie, I'm sorry, you too.

And while he calls the president “reckless” for a first-ever wartime tax cut, Kerry too promises tax cuts for the middle class.
