Here's my favorite part from the internal Fox News email, in which controversial Washington managing editor Bill Sammon instructed the staff to blatantly spin its presentation of health care debate by urging staffers not to use phrase “public option,” but instead to use the GOP-preferred “government-run” description [emphasis added]:
4) When newsmakers and sources use the term “public option” in our stories, there's not a lot we can do about it, since quotes are of course sacrosanct.
Irony alert!
While Sammon basically tramples over journalism's professional guidelines by issuing a top-down order about how Fox News should purposely slant its coverage of the health care debate, he pauses to remind employees how “sacrosanct” quotes are.
