A few minutes into the final match of her professional career, U.S. women’s soccer legend Megan Rapinoe tore her Achilles tendon, forcing her to sit out the remainder of the game. After the match, Rapinoe joked to the press, “I’m not a religious person or anything, and if there was a God, like this is proof that there isn’t — because this is fucked up.” Right-wing media figures, who have attacked Rapinoe as “selfish” and “anti-American” for expressing her “woke” political opinions, celebrated Rapinoe’s injury and claimed that it was in fact proof that God exists.
