Today, Gateway Pundit's Jim Hoft wrote a blog post entitled “Students instructed to chant 'I am an Obama Scholar (VIDEO).'” It is just the latest in what has been a pattern of conservative media figures freaking out whenever a child in school ever mentions President Obama (and it's caught on video).
In his post, Hoft asks “what is wrong with these leftists?” and lists the final lines of the motivational chant beneath the embedded video:
For I, am an Obama scholar.
An Obama scholar.
And I will strive to be.
Outstanding. Brilliant.
I will achieve. I will be motivated with a positive attitude.
However, if one were to listen to the entire motivational chant, any reasonable person would be hard pressed to argue against the statements made by the students:
Mountain. Move out of my way.
Mountain. Move out of my way.
Mountain of guns.
Move out of my way.
Mountain of drugs.
Move out of my way.
Mountain of violence.
Move out of my way.
Mountain of ignorance.
Move out of my way.
Because I. Am somebody.
And I can be. And I will be.
Anything. Anything. I want to be.
Doctor. Lawyer. Judge. Journalist.
Writer. Firefighter. Principal.
President. President. President.
Anything. I want to be.
If my mind. Can conceive it.
And my heart. Can believe.
Then I know. I know. I know.
I can achieve it.
For I, am an Obama scholar.
An Obama scholar.
And I will strive to be.
Outstanding. Brilliant.
I will achieve. I will be motivated with a positive attitude.
Mountain. Move out of my way.
Now, does Jim Hoft disagree with what the students said? Is he upset that a class full of African-American students was inspired by Obama's example and declared that they believe they can be anything they want to be? Is that something that only “these leftists” - as Hoft puts it - would tell African-American school children?
Or is it simply another unbelievable case of Obama Derangement Syndrome? At the end of the post, Hoft throws in his lot with other media figures in comparing a video such as this to brutal dictators:
Bill Hennessey added this in the comments:
Quick quiz: name five countries, past or present, where the youths were required to chant praises to their omnipotent ruler? Any five. Then add together the number of innocent people those regimes slaughtered for political expediency.
Yes, Hoft, school children declaring that they want to avoid guns, drugs, violence, and ignorance while striving to be what they want to be as an adult is just like “slaughtering” innocents “for political expediency.”
As for the idea that only a murderous regime would have children sing songs in praise of their leader, the 2006 Easter Egg Roll at the White House featured a chorus of Gulf coast school children singing George W. Bush's praises for (of all things) his administration's response to Hurricane Katrina. So perhaps this sort of thing isn't as nefarious as Hoft would have us believe.
