On his radio show today, Glenn Beck attacked President Obama for calling in his State of the Union address for greater governmental investment in education and more respect for teachers. Beck said: "[Obama] said last night that teachers, the one in front of the classroom is the one who affects the child the most. Well, there's your problem, President Obama. It should be the person that gave birth or the person that is raising the child. Mom and Dad are the greatest teachers."
Beck added that by pushing respect for teachers, Obama was talking about “indoctrination” of our children.
So, did Obama ignore parents and say that teachers have the greatest effect on children? Of course not. Quite to the contrary, Obama actually said: “Let's also remember that after parents, the biggest impact on a child's success comes from the man or woman at the front of the classroom” (emphasis added).
And Obama didn't make just one reference to parents. He also said: “That responsibility begins not in our classrooms, but in our homes and communities. It's family that first instills the love of learning in a child. Only parents can make sure the TV is turned off and homework gets done. We need to teach our kids that it's not just the winner of the Super Bowl who deserves to be celebrated, but the winner of the science fair.”
This is, of course, nothing new. Beck will NEVER let the facts get in the way of his attacks on progressives.
