Associated Press Reaches Deal To Keep Content On Google

After months of discussions and negotiations over how Associated Press content can be placed on Google, which included a brief blackout of AP news on the website, the two parties have reached an agreement to keep the content going.

AP Spokesman Paul Colford released the following announcement this morning:

The Associated Press and Google have reached a new agreement on the continued licensing of AP content by Google. Under the agreement, AP and Google will also work together in a number of new areas, such as ways to improve discovery and distribution of news.

No other details were released.

An AP story on the issue stated:

The agreement comes after months of sometimes thorny negotiations. At one point in the talks, Google Inc. stopped hosting AP content. Financial terms and the duration of the contract were not disclosed.

Google began to pay for AP's content in 2006 after the news agency threatened to sue. That contract expired in January but was extended while the talks continued.
