As President Donald Trump rolled out a proposal to cut environmental regulations during a White House ceremony Thursday, some media outlets’ Twitter accounts uncritically repeated his known falsehoods or failed to provide sufficient context with his quotes.

Last summer, after Trump skipped the G-7 summit’s meeting on climate change, several mainstream news organizations parroted Trump’s preposterous claim that he’s an environmentalist who wants the “cleanest air.” In mid-2019, the Trump administration announced it would replace the Obama-era Clean Power Plan with weaker regulations that could actually increase air pollution. Conventional air pollution has increased since Trump took office, and a study released in October found that fine particulate matter in the air had increased in 2017 and 2018, following a decline during the Obama administration. Carbon emissions driving climate change also surged in 2018. Trump also falsely claimed in his 2018 State of the Union address that the regulatory permit process was so bad that it takes 10 years to get a permit to build a road.

Trump's track record before taking office is even more ridiculous. Trump repeatedly called climate change a “hoax” and cast doubt on it in many other ways. In 2012, he wrote that climate change “was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive."

The Hill and CNN failed to mention Trump’s legacy of falsehoods on the environment and permit regulations when they repeated his statements from today’s White House event about air pollution, his views on climate change, and the permit process:
