January 6 Insurrection

On January 6, 2021, the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., was attacked by a mob of supporters of Donald Trump, two months after his defeat in the 2020 presidential election. The attack disrupted a joint session of Congress convened to certify the results of the presidential election of 2020, with the goal of preventing Joe Biden, the legitimate president-elect, from assuming office.

Right-wing propagandists downplayed the violence of the attempted coup, which ultimately resulted in nine deaths and more than 150 injured members of law enforcement. Right-wing media engineered a shift in broader GOP views of the January 6 insurrection by creating a revisionist counternarrative based on lies and misinformation.
