On June 17, author and longtime Clinton-basher David N. Bossie appeared as a guest on MSNBC's Scarborough Country for the second time in one week (and for the fourth time in four weeks). During the June 17 show, host and former U.S. Representative Joe Scarborough (R-FL) aired a new TV advertisement by Bossie's conservative organization Citizens United claiming that former President Bill Clinton is “responsible” for “leaving us vulnerable to terrorists”; as Media Matters for America previously reported, the ad was set to run during Clinton's June 20 appearance on CBS's 60 Minutes.
During his appearance on Scarborough Country, Bossie echoed the anti-Clinton TV ad, asserting, "[T]he September 11 attacks were a direct -- direct -- result of Bill Clinton's inaction over eight years."
Bossie also touted his participation in the “vast right-wing conspiracy that Bill Clinton always talked about”:
BOSSIE: I served as the chief investigator for the campaign finance investigation in Congress. I wish that he had been impeached on those counts, on those issues, but he wasn't. ... I worked very diligently on those financial crimes, that I saw, and, and so -- what -- I get frustrated that he [Clinton] tries to illegitimize all the work that all of us did in the 90s.
As Media Matters for America has previously noted, Bossie was fired in 1998 from his job as chief investigator for the House Committee on Government Reform and Oversight -- which was investigating alleged Clinton White House campaign finance abuses -- for his role in releasing selectively edited transcripts of former Clinton administration official Webster Hubbell's prison conversations.
