A few problems:

1) Before his explosive testimony today, Gordon Sondland was a Republican bundler who gave $1 million dollars to Trump's inaugural committee.

2) Trump was certainly not under the impression that he was supposed to fire Sondland, as he originally “hand-picked” Sondland to be ambassador to the European Union and praised him just recently:

Before turning wildly pro-Trump, Brent Bozell, the founder of the Media Research Center, said Trump “might be the greatest charlatan of them all” in National Review's “Against Trump” issue.
