As Media Matters' has noted, Fox News contributor Sarah Palin has emerged as one of Dr. Laura Schlessinger's highest profile defenders telling the embattled radio host “Don't retreat... reload” in a Twitter posting. Furthermore, Palin ratcheted up her absurd and offensive defense of Dr. Laura, claiming they've both been “shackled” by critics.
So, what must Dr. Laura think of the former half-term Governor of Alaska? Not very much -- at least when it comes to her selection as John McCain's running mate in 2008 -- according to a report on the Huffington Post:
But Dr. Laura herself was not so charitable back in 2008, when she criticized Palin for governing after she had a child born with Down's Syndrome.
In a blog post written shortly after Palin was selected as the Republican candidate for Vice President, and titled “Sarah Palin and Motherhood,” Schlessinger pronounced herself “stunned” and “extremely disappointed” that the GOP had chosen her:
Couldn't the Republican Party find one competent female with adult children to run for Vice President with McCain? I realize his advisors probably didn't want a “mature” woman, as the Democrats keep harping on his age. But really, what kind of role model is a woman whose fifth child was recently born with a serious issue, Down Syndrome, and then goes back to the job of Governor within days of the birth?
Dr. Laura's view -- in short -- is that women should wait until their children are grown to seek public office. Talk about dated and misogynistic. Men are certainly never held to such a standard.
Be it racially charged, anti-gay or misogynistic, it is comments like these that cost Dr. Laura her job.
