Discussing prairie dog relocation on his June 27 show, Fox News Radio 600 KCOL host and program director Scott James suggested that Colorado Media Matters was among those who get “all uptight” about his saying, “What do prairie dogs contribute to the food chain?” In fact, Colorado Media Matters has never addressed James' stance on prairie dog management, or any other wildlife issue. Colorado Media Matters has, however, documented numerous occasions when James has provided listeners with false or misleading information about immigration, abortion, global warming, stem cell research, and the Iraq war.
Before making his comments, James referenced a June 27 Fort Collins Coloradoan letter to the editor, which he misidentified as an op-ed piece, that proposed relocating a colony of prairie dogs away from an area slated for development.
From the June 27 broadcast of Fox News Radio 600 KCOL's Ride Home with The James Gang:
JAMES: Couple of op-eds in the Coloradoan today that excited me a little bit, that somewhat agitated me. One -- which always gets me in trouble -- and let me ask you, as you, a, a more moderate individual, how do you feel about prairie dogs?
PRODUCER: I don't know. They're annoying, I guess.
JAMES: You haven't thought a whole lot about it?
PRODUCER: Haven't given them much thought, no. I think I, you know, twisted my ankle stepping in a prairie dog hole once --
JAMES: See --
PRODUCER: -- when I was a kid.
JAMES: -- I grew up with a different perspective. I grew up as, as a farm and ranch kid, and I grew up watching cows stick their feet into, into holes, into prairie dog holes.
PRODUCER: Oh, that's right. We had this discussion.
JAMES: And then you would have to go out and dispose of said cow --
PRODUCER: Yes.
JAMES: -- just because of the economics of it all. And so I've seen that aspect of the prairie dog. Yet there's an op-ed piece in today's Coloradoan who talks about, “Well, they're going to develop on this piece of land, and how, what are they going to do to accommodate the prairie dogs?” My opinion, OK, make it a quick poisoning. Make it a double dose. “How are they going to relocate these prairie dogs?” You know, and then I'm called cruel and insensitive, and the PETA folks post me on their blog, which -- they've got, like, an entire section devoted to me. But, but, th -- then the PETA people post me on their blog, and Colorado Media Matters posts me on their blog, and everybody gets all uptight about me saying, “What do prairie dogs contribute to the food chain?” I would imagine that they feed foxes and coyotes.
