Newsday Union Rejects Second Contract Offer

Newsroom employees at Newsday of Long Island, N.Y., have rejected a contract offer from management for the second time this year, according to Mediabistro.com. This offer would have required salary cuts of 5% to 10%.

“Workers in the Graphic Communications Conference of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 406 on Sunday voted down a proposed contract with Long Island daily Newsday, 331-139,” the report said. "Newsday has had a contentious relationship with both its employees and parent company Cablevision for some time now. January negotiations between Newsday and the union prompted Teamsters general president James Hoffa to pledge his full support to Newsday staffers."

The story also quoted union negotiator George Tedeschi as saying: “This union is prepared to go back to the table and work toward an amicable resolution ... The vote not only showed disappointment with the company, but also the solidarity of all union members sticking together.”
