Numerous newspapers today made images of oil-soaked wildlife from the BP gulf debacle the main art for Page One, in many cases using a series of gripping photos from Associated Press photographer Charlie Riedel.

Politico posted a great gallery of the front-page images, ranging from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution to the Anchorage Daily News.

“Judging by the public response, Riedel's images stood out from what's been shot so far, recalling the iconic images of oil-soaked wildlife forever linked to the Exxon Valdez spill," writes Michael Calderone of Yahoo News. “On Thursday, there was immediately buzz on Twitter and cable news, with the Boston's Globe publishing eight of the photos on its popular blog, 'The Big Picture.' By Friday morning, newspaper readers across the country awoke to the same AP images on their doorsteps."

Do not be surprised if Riedel gets some Pulitzer consideration come next year.
