You have to love The Sacramento Bee's latest blog effort. It literally deals with a growing issue in the state: Marijuana.
Dubbed “Weed Wars,” the blog launched March 1 and is under the care and feeding of reporter Peter Hecht, who oversees the pot beat for the capital city paper.
“Now that there is an initiative that has qualified for the ballot, and there is a lot going on in local government to see if they can regulate and tax individual dispensers, it made sense,” Managing Editor Joyce Terhaar says of the blog's usefulness. “This is something that a lot of people are interested in.”
The ballot initiative Terhaar speaks of would legalize marijuana use for residents 21 and older. Proponents have turned in 700,000 signatures to get it on the November ballot.
The state has already approved marijuana use for medicinal reasons, but that has been challenged several times by federal authorities.
Since the blog launched, its items have ranged from information about the legalizing effort to the challenges faced by medicinal marijuana users on the job.
So far, no brownie recipes have appeared on the site. But don't be surprised if they do.
