Before President-elect Donald Trump has even taken office, Meta is again capitulating to false right-wing claims of anti-conservative bias and censorship, announcing that it will end fact-checking and remove most content moderation from its platforms.

Both the substance of the changes and the messaging from Meta mirror — and are seemingly a direct appeal to — Trump and MAGA media, who have spent years claiming to be defenders of free expression and victims of censorship. But Meta’s announcement omits two key facts: Right-leaning Facebook content has consistently outperformed left-leaning and nonaligned content, showing it's not being censored. And previous gaps in content moderation have caused real-world harm, including helping foment the January 6 insurrection, contributing to anti-LGBTQ sentiment, and fueling vaccine hesitancy.

Media Matters’ Kayla Gogarty wrote this piece detailing how Meta has surrendered to right-wing falsehoods. I invite you to read the whole piece here.

  • Right-wing media figures baselessly claim LA wildfires are burning out of control because the fire chief is an LGBTQ woman who supports DEI

Right-wing media figures are exploiting the devastating Los Angeles County wildfires to further their crusade against diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, suggesting the fires are burning out of control because LAFD’s chief is an LGBTQ woman who supports DEI initiatives, declaring “DEI = DIE,” and claiming that “it literally leads to death.”

Wildfires in Los Angeles have killed at least ten people as of this writing and forced nearly 200,000 more to evacuate their homes. The fires remain largely uncontained. LA’s Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley, who is the first woman and first openly LGBTQ person to serve in the role, said that “the fire is being fueled by a combination of strong winds and surrounding topography.” Right-wing media figures, however, are blaming the tragedy on Crowley for being an LGBTQ woman and on DEI.

    • Newsmax host Rob Finnerty suggested Crowley was hired only due to DEI and declared that “these are not once-in-a-generation wildfires. This is not climate change. This is death by DEI.”
    • Fox News contributor Leo Terrell attacked “DEI nonsense that that LA Fire Department chief supports,” and baselessly claimed that the LAFD has “no intention of putting out these fires.”
    • Charlie Kirk called the wildfires “a major public policy disaster, and for people in California that have been voting for Democrats, this is what you get — you get mismanaged government, you get woke fire departments.”

On January 6, 2021, as a violent mob stormed the U.S. Capitol and halted Congress’ counting of electoral votes, Fox News host Brian Kilmeade dashed off a desperate text to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. “Please, get him on TV. Destroying everything you have accomplished,” he wrote of Trump. But on January 6, 2025, Kilmeade expressed a drastically different view. In one segment on Fox & Friends, Killmeade mocked Democrats who “want to point out how different” today’s events will be “from four years ago” when “democracy was in danger.” Kilmeade added that the American people think that January 6, “as bad as that day was, it’s a small part of the Donald Trump story.”

The Fox & Friends host is one of an array of right-wing media figures who said at the time that the January 6 insurrection was a calamity, that the rioters were criminals, and that Trump himself bore responsibility for their actions. But over the past four years, they have participated in the right’s Great Forgetting, making their peace with Trump’s attempted coup and supporting his return to the presidency.

Media Matters’ Matt Gertz outlines the right-wing hypocrites responsible for this Great Forgetting. I invite you to read his entire piece here.
