Stewart Rhodes founded The Oath Keepers in the wake of the election of President Barack Obama. Rhodes’ Oath Keepers militia, which is comprised of “former law enforcement officials and military veterans,” is described by the Southern Poverty Law Center as “one of the largest radical antigovernment groups in the U.S. today.” The Los Angeles Times reported Rhodes has indicated that some Oath Keepers “have signed up as poll watchers, while others plan to monitor the election armed and ‘undercover,’ drawing their weapons if needed.” In May 2023, Rhodes was sentenced to eighteen years in prison after being convicted of seditious conspiracy for his role in the attack on January 6, 2021.
