On September 2, radio host Rush Limbaugh dedicated almost half of the three-hour Rush Limbaugh Show to replaying portions of Senator Zell Miller's (D-GA) September 1 speech at the Republican National Convention. During this time, Limbaugh repeatedly heaped praise on the senator.
Following are some of Limbaugh's observations on Miller's speech and on the senator's post-speech media interviews:
-
Zell Miller owned the night. Hurricane Zell arrived in New York at 10:01 p.m. last night and just left the place in shambles. And he left the media in shambles.
-
[I]t's just unbelievable to see what Chris Matthews tried to do to Zell Miller. What CNN's panel tried to -- and Zell Miller wasn't havin' any of it. There you got an example of somebody who's not gonna hold back. He's not gonna sit there and be polite. He's gonna respond in kind and didn't take any guff.
-
You had the stars on Monday and Tuesday night, paying tribute to President Bush and -- and yesterday was contrast day. And here's Kerry's record bein' blown to smithereens. For the first time, last night, the Republican Convention, Zell Miller did the job the mainstream press ought to be doing and should have been doing.
-
Zell came out swinging. This is the -- this is a segment of his speech where he really, really, really jumped on Democrats for seeing American soldiers as occupiers and not liberators.
-
I tell you who else going to be on fire last night -- American women. Because American women did not see a girly man, did not see some guy out there trying to finesse things.
They saw a guy. They saw a man be a man, talking about manly things, defending the country, defending family. You heard him talk about his family. This is -- this -- this is -- this is -- this is going to, I think, generate a lot of support from -- this is going to surprise a lot of people where the support comes from.
-
And Zell pulled out of his pocket a bunch of papers and said, I could have said more. He voted - I got more evidence than I can have time to say last night about the weapon system he voted against. He's waving the paper around them. Just shut them all up.
And he -- at the end he said so, this -- this man wants to be commander in chief, eh? After getting rid of all these weapon systems, what's he going to use, spitballs?
And of course, everybody -- the -- that was it, because that nailed him. You know, the -- the -- the -- when you -- when you -- when you rip into somebody and you manage to tell the truth about them, and spitballs, of course, is -- is -- is symbolic.
It was the perfect line, and they're reacting the way they did because it hit home.
-
[T]his is dramatic.
-
This was -- this was just a devastating recitation of the weapon systems that Kerry has voted against.
-
I've been telling you folks, Zell Miller confirmed it for me in his own way, the fringe and the kooks of the Democratic Party have taken over the mainstream of that party.
