On his radio show today, Rush Limbaugh unleashed some of his trademark vitriol on President Obama, claiming the president “celebrated abortion” in his statement on the 38th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision:
LIMBAUGH: And how 'bout last week? Obama celebrated abortion by heralding the Roe versus Wade Supreme Court decision. What else would you call it, but celebrating abortion?
Actually, Rush, I can think of quite a few things to call it other than “celebrating abortion.”
The statement did not just emphasize the president's support for reproductive rights, but his support for pregnant women and mothers. In his statement, Obama advocated for programs aimed at helping women prevent unintended pregnancies and promoting adoption. Far from a celebration of abortion, Obama's statement was a celebration of women and the rights and freedoms accorded to them by law. From Obama's statement:
“Today marks the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that protects women's health and reproductive freedom, and affirms a fundamental principle: that government should not intrude on private family matters. I am committed to protecting this constitutional right. I also remain committed to policies, initiatives, and programs that help prevent unintended pregnancies, support pregnant women and mothers, encourage healthy relationships, and promote adoption. And on this anniversary, I hope that we will recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights, the same freedoms, and the same opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams.”
While Limbaugh's characterization of Obama's statement is wildly off base, his rhetoric should come as no surprise given his contempt for "feminazis," "NAGs" (his "pet name" for the National Organization for Women), and Planned Parenthood, not to mention his history of pushing the false claim that Obama supports “infanticide.”
