Will O'Reilly And Hannity Get Up The Courage To Cover News Corp. Hacking Scandal Tonight?

News Corp.'s deputy chief operating officer James Murdoch testified, again, today before Parliament about the epic phone-hacking scandal that has consumed Rupert Murdoch's British media empire since July.

Asked about previous contradictions in his testimony and pressed by incredulous lawmakers about Murdoch's professed ignorance about so many key aspects of the hacking investigation, his testimony did not go especially well.

The hacking story, of course, has been arguably the biggest media business news story of the year, as the controversy has completely roiled Rupert Murdoch's company, causing him to close an entire newspaper and jettison several of his top lieutenants who became tainted by the scandal. Amazingly, four months in and there's no end in sight for the still-unraveling story, which guarantees that it will remain the topic of debate and news coverage for months to come.

Except, that is, on Fox News' “O'Reilly Factor” and “Hannity,” which have displayed extraordinary dedication to not covering the sweeping story that sits at the intersection of media and politics.

According to a Nexis search, Bill O'Reilly's primetime program has covered the hacking story one time, on July 19, which means he's covered the story once more than Sean Hannity, whose program has never discussed the hacking scandal.

Let's put this in perspective. Both shows air for an hour each weeknight, which means that combined, they are on 10 hours each week, and 40 hours each month. The hacking story broke in July, which means since then ,“The O'Reilly Factor” and “Hannity” have aired more than 160 hours of original programming. If you subtract the time for commercials, the shows have aired roughly 6,400 minutes of programming since the hacking story broke.

Of that, “The O'Reilly Factor” and “Hannity” have set aside approximately eight minutes to discuss the sprawling News Corp. hacking scandal.

C'mon Bill and Sean. Work some courage up and cover your boss' woes tonight.
