Fox Noticias ignored “floating island of garbage” remarks about Puerto Rico from Trump's MSG rally

The Monday edition of Fox’s new Spanish-language show Fox Noticias failed to mention racist comments made during a rally for Donald Trump at Madison Square Garden calling Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean.”

On October 15, Fox News launched Fox Noticias, a new daily Spanish-language news show airing on Fox’s Spanish-language sports network, Fox Deportes. The show is anchored by Rachel Campos-Duffy, a Fox News host and contributor who has spent years spreading anti-immigrant rhetoric and misinformation about abortion and COVID-19

During a Trump rally on October 27 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, comedian Tony Hinchliffe made a series of racist jokes, including one in which he called Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean.” The comments came ahead of a Trump rally in Pennsylvania, a swing state that is home to the third-largest Puerto Rican diaspora in the country, and have been met by backlash from Republicans and Democrats alike.

On the October 28 edition of Fox Noticias, Campos-Duffy blatantly ignored Hinchliffe’s comments, despite the show’s stated aim of covering “issues that matter most” to the Latino community. Campos-Duffy instead covered the rally by praising Trump for bringing “his immigration message to New York City, a city plagued by migrant crime.”

RACHEL CAMPOS-DUFFY:  Welcome again to Fox Noticias. Donald Trump brings his immigration message to New York City, a city plagued by migrant crime and an influx of illegal immigrants. Trump had a political rally Sunday at the iconic MSG, which is considered one of the most famous venues in the world. The full 19,500 tickets were sold out a few hours after the event was announced.
