Associated Press Gives Award to Football Player After Revote

A member of the Houston Texans, who had faced losing a Rookie of the Year award after failing a drug test, will receive the award following a re-vote of football writers who chose to give the honor to him despite the test results.

Earlier this week, AP had considered stripping the award from Brian Cushing after he tested positive for a banned substance following his rookie season in 2009. Instead, the news outlet asked football writers to revote on the award, with a Wednesday deadline, according to USA Today.

The revote ended with Cushing receiving fewer votes, just 18, out of the 50 writers involved. But he still took more than any other player.

“I was just glad to hear the news, that people stuck by me. Very honored,” Cushing said in the story. “I'm very happy to have the award once again, and I'm just happy with how everything turned out.”
