That's what the columnist Peter Beinart wrote:

The president is furiously backtracking; Republicans are clawing over each other to demonize Muslims; Democrats are dead silent.

Beinert makes no effort in the rest of the column to back up that claim. And in fact, I don't think he can. As Media Matters has noted, there's no evidence Obama backtracked on his comments about the proposed Islamic Center. But pundits sure like to tell that tale.
