As the 2024 Republican primaries draw closer, Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade has been bashing former President Donald Trump on his radio show while standing up for possible presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. In between playing clips of Saturday Night Live sketches making fun of Trump and agreeing that Trump will lose even worse in 2024 than he did in 2020, Kilmeade regularly defends DeSantis’ governance and presidential aspirations while he denounces Trump’s behavior.
Kilmeade’s commentary on his program for Fox News Radio is yet another example of rifts within right-wing media over the upcoming Republican presidential primary. Other right-wing media personalities seemingly taking sides in the DeSantis/Trump split include Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk, who also jabs at Trump’s decision-making and his attacks on DeSantis. On Fox, this pattern tracks through the network abruptly cutting off Trump as he criticized DeSantis during a recent interview on Hannity, prime-time host Laura Ingraham suggesting that DeSantis represents “the new populist wing of the party that seems to me to be the dominant,” and Outnumbered co-host Kayleigh McEnany celebrating the Florida governor for supposedly moving “to the right of President Trump” on key conservative issues.
