CBS' Julianna Goldman Fact-Checks Trump's RNC Speech: He “Didn't Provide Much Context”

JULIANNA GOLDMAN: Well, Donald Trump, he declared himself the law and order candidate. He began that speech with a promise and then unleashed a series of statistics.

DONALD TRUMP: Here at our convention, there will be no lies.

GOLDMAN: Donald Trump said last night he planned to honor the American people with the truth and nothing else.
[BEGIN VIDEO]
TRUMP: These are the facts. Homicides last year increased by 17 percent in America's 50 largest cities. That's the largest increase in 25 years.

GOLDMAN: Trump blames the Obama administration for reversing progress. A Washington Post story from January does show a 17 percent uptick in 2015 rates, but The Post suggests there's no single explanation for the increases. And national murder rates have been dropping for decades.

TRUMP: The number of police officers killed in the line of duty has risen by almost 50 percent compared to this point last year.

GOLDMAN: The rate is much lower. The 67 law enforcement deaths recorded through July 21 is only an 8 percent increase over last year.

TRUMP: Household incomes are down more than $4,000 since the year 2000.

GOLDMAN: Hillary Clinton and Trump both used this number and it's correct. By 2014, median household income was down to nearly $54,000.

TRUMP: I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and depression of a hateful foreign ideology. Believe me.

GOLDMAN: The Republican platform approved for the convention has been called the most anti-gay in history. Its priorities, overturn nationwide same-sex marriage and discourage same-sex adoption. Now, in general, last night, the statements were largely true. They just didn't provide much context. Norah, that's a fact of political speeches that we'll likely we will be seeing on both sides between now and Election Day.
