During the August 24 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends, co-host Gretchen Carlson claimed that “a lot of the top” White House positions are “anonymous because they haven't been named yet to certain posts,” citing the Army secretary as an example. However, President Obama named Rep. John McHugh (R-NY) to the post on June 2, and The New York Times noted that “Republican senators are holding up nominees like John McHugh for Army secretary to influence what happens to the detainees at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.”

Carlson claims Army secretary yet to be “named”
Carlson: WH positions “still anonymous because they haven't been named yet to certain posts. Now we're talking about ... the Army secretary.” From the August 24 edition of Fox & Friends:
CARLSON: Let me move on to this topic with regard to the president. Apparently, even though he is on vacation this week, there are a lot of positions in the White House if you're looking for a job. There are still a lot of positions that are available there -- a lot of the top players -- they are still anonymous because they haven't been named yet to certain posts. Now we're talking about the assistant Treasury secretary for financial markets, the inspector general, the Army secretary, the head of the Agency --
PETER JOHNSON JR. (guest co-host): Oh, my goodness, look at this.
CARLSON: -- for International Development. You remember last month when Secretary of State -- a person who has been named to the post, Hillary Clinton -- expressed frustration at how slow the vetting process is with some of these types of jobs. And now, apparently --
BRIAN KILMEADE (co-host): You know, the czars got named quick, Gretch.
CARLSON: Well, that's -- that's a good point.
Fox on June 2: “Obama Names Rep. John McHugh (R-NY) Army Secretary”
From Fox News' June 2 live coverage of Obama naming McHugh Army secretary:
JANE SKINNER (co-host): We're awaiting now an announcement from President Obama, as we've been telling you. We're going to take a look at these pictures from the White House. He's going to be announcing his choice for secretary of the Army, and we're told -- it has been confirmed in fact by [correspondent] Jennifer Griffin at the Pentagon -- that he has chosen a Republican, Congressman John McHugh, you see him there, from the state of New York.
[...]
JON SCOTT (co-host): So there under the famous portrait of George Washington that resides in the White House, the commander of the first Continental Army, a new Army secretary is nominated -- John McHugh, a congressman, Republican from upstate New York. [Happening Now, 6/2/2009]
While Obama spoke, Fox News ran the following onscreen text:
NY Times: GOP senators “holding up” McHugh's appointment
Times: “Republican senators are holding up nominees like John McHugh” because of Gitmo. The New York Times reported in an August 23 article that “Republican senators are holding up nominees like John McHugh for Army secretary to influence what happens to the detainees at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.” [New York Times, 8/23/09]

Interestingly enough, these two gentlemen, the president and the congressman, disagree on one very important military issue, and that is the closing of Guantánamo Bay. We'll see if he brings that up.
JON SCOTT (co-host): John McHugh represents a district in upstate New York right on the Canadian border; it's a district that includes Fort Drum, one of the big military installations up there. I've been up there -- beautiful country. Now, the president.
OBAMA: Good afternoon, everybody.
[...]
McHUGH: But I want to make one final point, if I may. I feel very blessed today. I am blessed today. But the fact of the matter is I'm nothing more than the latest in a growing line of individuals of many different backgrounds, many different life experiences, as my nomination suggests, differing political persuasions, who have been provided by President Obama the chance to heed, to answer new, important, and challenging problems facing this country.
Mr. President, for the opportunity to be in that long and growing and proud line, I thank you and I hope never to let you down.
OBAMA: Thank you so much.
SCOTT: So there under the famous portrait of George Washington that resides in the White House, the commander of the first Continental Army, a new Army secretary is nominated -- John McHugh, a congressman, Republican from upstate New York.
