Last week, I pointed out that Fox News' new hire, former WJLA anchor Doug McKelway, was best known for an egregious falsehood about President Obama.
Last night, McKelway appeared in his first segment for Fox News' flagship program, Special Report. And wouldn't you know it? He got things started right -- by forwarding the blatantly false claim that the DREAM Act, a progressive priority, would offer “a free ride to college.”
As David Leopold, president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, which supports the DREAM Act, told us:
It is simply wrong to claim that the Dream Act offers a “free ride” to college for eligible immigrants. Under the legislation passed by the House last night the DREAM immigrants are eligible for no greater benefits than other lawful permanent residents or U.S. citizens. These include certain student loans and federal work-study programs.
But McKelway gave no indication that the claim was false, simply reporting, “The Democrats say that citizenship could also be contingent upon two years of military service, but the Republicans counter who would want to join the military when there's that better option of a free ride to college with no degree and no course load required?”
Nice hire, Fox News. No wonder McKelway's old colleagues think he's a “perfect fit” for your network.
