Today in Fox News ethics problems: Bill Kristol edition

Another day, another case of a Fox News personality engaging in ethically dubious GOP advocacy.

On Friday, I pointed out that Fox News had turned Sean Hannity's prime-time show over to Liz Cheney, co-founder of the right-wing national security advocacy group Keep America Safe. Yesterday, I highlighted Dick Morris' reported plans to “campaign for some 40 Republican congressional candidates in 2010.”

Today brings us the news that Fox News contributor Bill Kristol chairs an organization that is reportedly targeting Democratic representatives with attack ads:

The hawkish Emergency Committee for Israel is targeting two more imperiled House Democrats , Virginia's Glenn Nye and Connecticut's Jim Himes, with ads attacking them for signing a letter pressing Israel to ease conditions for civilians in Gaza and warning it to avoid “collective punishment.”

The ad, a version of which already aired against Ohio Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy [who rather emphatically rejected its charges], notes that most House Democrats wouldn't sign what it calls “anti-Israel letter” and suggests viewers ask the members why they “joined an assault on Israel.”

[...]

The ads pit ECI -- chaired by Gary Bauer and Bill Kristol -- against the left-leaning J Street, which circulated the letter, and they attempt to exact a cost for deviating from both congressional parties' traditionally near-total support for Israel's security policies.

This sort of naked partisan work seems to be new ground for Kristol. In an extensive report back in April, we documented at least 20 Fox News personalities that have endorsed, raised money, or campaigned for Republican candidates or causes, or against Democratic candidates or causes. Kristol was not one of them; he did, however, receive travel and lodging reimbursements from the Republican National Committee in late March.
