In what could only be an attempt to strengthen his grip on the title of "Dumbest Man on the Internet," Jim Hoft declared that the Israeli delegation to the United Nations General Assembly boycotted President Obama's speech this morning:
Just one thing: Hoft's claim is absolutely, 100 percent wrong. (updated after the jump)
His evidence is video of Obama's U.N. speech, which does show that the Israeli delegation's seats are empty. However, that's because the delegates are celebrating the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. And as Reuters reported, the spokeswoman for the Israeli mission made this plainly clear: “It's not a boycott.” From Reuters:
Israel's delegation was absent from the assembly hall, but a spokeswoman for the Israeli U.N. mission said it was due to the Jewish holiday of Sukkoth, the Feast of Tabernacles.
“It's not a boycott,” she said.
The only question now is whether Hoft will correct his embarrassingly false claim, ignore it, or just delete it and pretend it never happened.
UPDATE: Hoft chose to address his embarrassing mistake with Secret Option No. 4: writing that the “Israelis admitted later that it wasn't a boycott" and then dishonestly asserting that the Israelis “just skipped it.” From his post:
No, Jim, that's not what happened. The Israeli delegates didn't just “skip” Obama's speech; they were observing a Jewish holiday, as the Reuters article Hoft linked to clearly notes. And they didn't “admit later” what happened. As Jake Tapper reported, "[T]he delegation informed other countries in advance that Isaraeli [sic] officials would not be attending today's events because of the Jewish holiday."
Hoft can't even correct his falsehood without being blatantly dishonest.
