A Florida televison reporter's friendship with a congressional candidate, which apparently goes to the level of providing him with media-related advice, has drawn complaints from the candidate's opponent, according to the Palm Beach Post. The reporter's bosses reportedly found it “inconsistent” with their policy, but did not explain how they resolved the situation.
The dispute involves WPTV reporter Angela Sachitano and her links to Republican congressional candidate Allen West, the Post reports. It states the link has drawn fire from the rival campaign of U.S. Rep. Ron Klein, D-Boca Raton.
Key to the complaint is a video of a West campaign event from last month in which he cites Sachitano as one of his campaign's biggest supporters and notes her as someone “who does our media relations.”
“Sachitano has no formal role with the West campaign, but she and her husband are friends with the candidate, West campaign manager Josh Grodin said,” according to the Post. “West said in an e-mail that Sachitano 'provides me insights into how to improve my media appearance/presence and conduct of interviews.'”
This is apparently not okay with the television station. The Post quotes WPTV News Director Jeff Brogan as saying: “Through her husband Angela has a personal friendship with Allen West. While we have no reason to believe that relationship has negatively impacted her work as a journalist we did find her involvement with this campaign inconsistent with our policy. We've taken the appropriate action to address the situation.”
He did not indicate what that action was.
