With Twitter, Facebook and other social media devices all but standard now in reporting, media relations and day-to-day business, the archiving of these content items is about to become the new worry for government agencies, according to a story in The Oklahoman of Oklahoma City.
The report states that Oklahoma state officials are already having to figure out how to keep records of such notes, postings, e-mails and tweets so that they follow standard records and record-keeping laws. Other state and federal government agencies are likely in the same boat.
“Facebook status updates or tweets from Twitter can be viewed online, but the companies allow searching for limited periods of time,” the story stated. “That could pose problems if agencies receive open records requests for updates or content that goes back two or three years.”
