On the September 17 broadcast of Savage Nation, radio host Michael Savage revisited his previous comments (which Media Matters for America noted) that former President Bill Clinton would fully recover from his recent heart surgery because “hell was full.” When a caller remarked that it was “a great comment,” Savage admitted, "[M]aybe I shouldn't have said it," then added, “but it was on the level of Mark Twain -- anyone can understand good political humor. ... I mean, that was as good as Mark Twain in his heyday.”
From the September 17 Savage Nation:
CALLER: Well I just wanted to call you and let you know last week there, when Clinton had his open-heart deal, you made a great comment on the radio about hell being too full for Clinton --
SAVAGE: [laughing] No, what I said was, maybe I shouldn'ta [sic] said it, but it was on the level of Mark Twain -- anyone can understand good political humor, I said, this is when he went in for the surgery and he came out successfully, thank God, I said, I understand hell was full so Bill Clinton will be with us for awhile. I mean, that was as good as Mark Twain in his heyday.
From the September 7 Savage Nation:
SAVAGE: We heard of course, that hell was full and therefore Mr. Clinton will be with us for a while longer -- but we wish him the best nevertheless.
From the September 3 Savage Nation:
SAVAGE: I understand that Bill Clinton will be getting bypass surgery. He will be with us a while longer because we understand that hell was full -- and he will be granted a full recovery. We do know that he is getting bypass surgery, but we cannot confirm it is of the heart. It may be of another organ. You wanna tell jokes today, we can tell jokes today.
